Two squares and a tilted rectangle

Two squares share a baseline, and a tilted rectangle crosses them. Find its area from just one side length -- the skill is cutting the picture into triangles of equal area.

  1. 1

    Find the rectangle area

    ABCDArea = ?5 cm
    Two squares stand side by side on the same horizontal baseline. The larger square is on the left and has a side length of 5 cm. Its bottom-right corner B is also the bottom-left corner of the smaller square. A is the bottom-left corner of the larger square, D is its top-right corner, and C is the top-right corner of the smaller square. One long side of a tilted rectangle joins A to C. The opposite long side passes through D, and the rectangle extends between the perpendicular sides through A and C. What is the area of the tilted rectangle, in square centimetres?
